MARIA SILVA, WHO CAME TO THIS COUNTRY AT AGE 11 FROM PORTUGAL, feels she is very fortunate in her sweetbread recipe, which she had from her mother, Maria Alberto.

“It’s homemade,” she said. “From my mother’s recipe. She was famous on St. Michael for her sweetbread for weddings and Holy Ghost feasts.”

Maria Silva remembers well learning to make sweetbread when she was a child and the recipe is one she’s proud to use today.

“My sweetbread is better,” she said.

“It’s very moist. When people try mine they always say how good it is.”
